Updates - 16 December 2016

Hello everyone,

Hope your holidays, whatever form they might take, are pleasant and filled with love, contentment, and renewal.

PBIS Updates
Sheila White sent out some good information about revisions our PBIS Committee has made to our program recently.  They're reprinted below to ensure everyone's up-to-speed with what we hope to accomplish in our efforts to make this vital process work even better here at Marshall.
Many of you have expressed frustration since we lost our PBIS staff member, as we have not had an intermediary place for students when they become a barrier to classroom learning. We listened and have come up with a school-wide plan that will be implemented starting in January.
Buddy Classrooms: Each teacher will partner with another teacher as Buddy Classrooms. You get to choose, with some parameters. Kinder teachers will partner with 3rd grade and Poland. First grade and Hulls will partner with fourth grade and Bergs. Second grade will partner with fifth grade and Fisher/Baker. Once you have "Buddied Up", please inform me of the partnership as a record will be kept. I realize there are not exactly the same number of classrooms per grade level, so let's get creative to make sure we all have a buddy. The idea is that it isn't a same grade level because of peer interactions. Ms. White's room, Mrs. Paez's room, and a few other locations will be available as well. The idea is that you will teach your students the process. Each classroom will set up an area where students will sit and "reflect" on their behavior. (More on the reflection forms later this week.) Your "buddy class area" should also be used for your own students prior to sending them out of the class. Procedural information will be in your box by the end of this week or right after Winter break. I am creating a PBIS folder for each of your classrooms. Buddy classrooms are not optional. Please embrace this process as we must work together, as we always do, to provide the best learning environments for all our students.
Discipline Referral Forms: They are being rewritten to include the above changes. These forms will provide you with a paper trail in case of recurring behaviors. They become invaluable when a student is referred to the B-GDM. They will be required for any office referrals. The shorter, and more specific forms will be available immediately after winter break. Third: How are we doing? A new Google Form will be located on the sidebar in the blue note, once it has been finalized, that will allow you to help us help you. What is going well? What ideas do you have? Our intention is that we take the second semester of this school year to implement and tweak these new programs so that the start of the 2017 school year has us with a fully functioning system for behavior concerns. As always, I am here to answer questions and process ideas. Please feel free to drop an email or stop in any time.

Updates - 09 December 2016

Hello everyone,

You learn something new every day, or so they say.

Yesterday I learned that the anatomical drawing of the female uterus that's used in the boy's sexual health class is rendered on the poster somewhat out-of-scale. According to the instructor, if a real woman were to have a uterus that size, "She would need to be nearly seven feet tall."

Hate to think I would never have learned this had I not had to sit with a few of our fifth-grade behavior-support boys in their sex-ed class this week.  I'm 24 years into this profession, taught fifth grade for some 18 years of it, and yesterday was the very first I'd ever heard about the seven-foot-tall woman and her oversized uterus.

Amazing. #lifelonglearner

New Staff
If you haven't already had the chance, I hope you'll take a sec in the next few days to seek out and welcome our newest staff member, Sherri Dustin.  She's taken on a 0.5 FTE SPED Resource position for the balance of the year here.  You can find her around the school building or in room 26 where she's set up shop with Amanda Roth.

Tax Credit
Contributions are starting to roll in!  We've collected about $3000 since last week.

Please continue to put reminders about tax credit in front of your students' parents as often as you're able.  Likewise, I hope you'll take a few minutes to revise and send the appeal-letter to your friends and family members who might want to take advantage of the program.

Don't forget, there's lots of helpful info about what tax credit is and does for Marshall on the school blog.

Sure do appreciate your efforts in this regard.

Updates - 02 December 2016

Hello everyone,

Well, it's officially upon us, the season of the year I most dread... tax credit season.

No other cause, no other endeavor, no other initiative that we undertake at Marshall School compels me to lose more sleep more than our annual tax credit drive.  I worry way more about tax credit than I do about test scores.  I worry more about tax credit than I do about free-and-reduced lunch counts.  I worry more about tax credit than I do about our annual enrollment numbers.  And trust me, I worry a lot about each of those things.

Why do I worry so much about tax credit?  Because of the great, almost immeasurable value we place on every single tax credit dollar we receive.  Because of the amazing opportunities we are able to provide to you and your students with every tax credit dollar we expend.  Because of the huge benefit we are able to return to you and your classroom with every tax credit dollar we encumber for field-trips, materials, special one-of-a-kind extracurricular programs, residencies, curriculum, and even, on occasion, capital items.

Tax credit dollars are easy to spend.  Every year we spend almost $40,000.

Tax credit dollars are hard to acquire.  Every year we struggle in earnest up to the very last minute to get enough of them.

Every tax credit dollar that comes into the school comes after a direct personal appeal, a personal reminder, a personal plea that comes from one of us to the parents of our students, community stakeholders, close friends, and family members.  Some schools are able to just sit back and watch the tax credit donations roll in.  Not Marshall.  We've learned over the years that our community needs to be reminded and often retaught about the tax advantages that come from making a donation to our school.  And we've learned that this appeal is best heard and understood when it comes from you, from a member of our faculty and staff who understands the benefits our students derive from every single tax credit donation made to Marshall School.

I hope you'll make the effort to reach out to your students' parents, your friends, and your family members in the next few weeks to remind them about our need of their tax credit donations.

Below are a few items that many of us have found useful when making our annual appeals for tax credit donations.

This letter has been used with great success as a first step in making your direct appeals.  Please feel free to download it and revise it to suit your needs.

This flyer was sent home earlier this week and will be sent home again and again between now and the mid-April tax filing deadline.  Feel free to download it to include with the letter you sent to your friends and family members.

This page on the Marshall School Blog provides some helpful additional information about what Arizona's public school tax credit program is and its advantages for tax payers.

Also, newly updated full-color Marshall School brochures are available in the front office.  We have nearly 500 of them.  Not enough to send home with every kid, but certainly enough for you to include with your letters if you'd like to send them to folks far afield who might want to know more about who Marshall School is and what we're going to do with their donation.

Remember: tax credit works for anyone and everyone who pays taxes in the state of Arizona.

Thanks for your help and participation in this process.

FOSS
Now comes the time to make a decision about FOSS.  Teachers, please spend a few minutes thoughtfully completing this short survey form to help us determine our next steps.

Thanks.

Canned Food Drive
Don't forget to encourage your students next week to bring in items.  The parade will start at 9:00 on Friday morning.  I suspect this may be the last year for our special guest since Mrs. Claus is retiring and all...

Updates - 22 November 2016

Hello everyone,

Hope your long weekend is splendid!  Weather good for travel and also for getting outdoors to do fun stuff has been ordered up.  I recommend you enjoy it in the company of those you love.

Bon Festivus, Friends
On the eve of our November Thanksgiving Break it's not premature to note that we're also just a few weeks away from our even-longer Winter Break in December.  With that in mind, it's also not too soon to begin making plans to attend our somewhat occasionally-annual all-staff holiday gathering.

The Faculty Engagement Committee has made arrangements with Dark Sky Brewery to host us at their establishment downtown on Friday 16 December from 3:30 to whenever.  More details to follow as the day draws closer.  But for now, please plan to attend.  Won't be the same gathering 'round the ol' Festivus Pole (for the traditional airing of the grievances, natch) without you.

Calendar
  • Tuesday 29 November
    • Site Council (Science Council report) in the Library, 4:00
  • Wednesday 30 November

Updates -- 18 November 2016

Hello everyone,

Sorry for my absences this week.  I really was at a (required for admins) two-day Adaptive Schools training on Monday and Tuesday.  And I really was sick on Wednesday and Thursday.  I know these days-out come right on the heels of my recent three-day absence for the (strongly encouraged for admins) Edupoint conference.  And that all these absences come immediately prior to the Thanksgiving holiday as well.

For what it's worth: I'm really sorry for missing so much work.  Always stresses me out, not being here.

Nevertheless, my sincere thanks to everyone who's worked so hard to keep the wheels on (more-or-less) while I've been away.

Humble Brag
I want to share something personal with you in today's Blue Note, as a reminder of the real, life-changing impact you have on your students.

Tacy Ashby, former teacher, principal, Arizona Deputy State Superintendent of Public Instruction, and currently one of the vice presidents at Grand Canyon University, recently wrote a tribute to her fourth-grade teacher who she says changed her life and "influenced my mind as a child, helping me to formulate my passion and purpose, ultimately leading me into the profession of teaching and service in public education."

That teacher happens to be my mom.

I hope you'll consider taking a couple minutes to read Dr. Ashby's story today, if only to be reminded, once again, of the super-important, life-changing work you do everyday.  Forewarning: article contains a quotation from Christian scripture.

Updates - 10 November 2016

Hello everyone,

Happy long-weekend!  In addition to today's donuts, I also ordered up some amazingly beautiful weather for your days off this weekend, just to tell you all, once again, how awesome I think you are.

Hope you're able to get out and enjoy it.

And thank a vet.  Don't forget.

Grading and Assessment Feedback
Good stuff this morning!  Thanks, teachers, for your participation and feedback.  Below's what you had to say about standards-based grading and our new reporting/assessment system.  I'll be passing all this stuff along to the elementary admin team later today, too, and have every hope that it will guide our decision-making going forward.

Click the images to embiggen them.

Standards-based Education in the Elementary Classroom
Speaking of standard-based grading, I hope you'll take a second to look over the PD opportunity that was offered to teachers this week by Chelsea Lohr.  In the class she will be teaching, Standards-based Education in the Elementary Classroom, Ms. Lohr hope to help teachers build "on the philosophy of standards-based grading... to enhance standards-based practices in your classroom."

See the email Standards Based Education 301 Training for more information.

Updates - 01 November 2016

Hello everyone,

As you know, I'll be out Wednesday through Friday this week.  I'm headed to the Edupoint (Synergy) conference in California.

It's in Anaheim.  At the Disneyland Hotel, in fact.  So Lisa and Bekah are going to drive over with me and we're going to try to make a little Disneyland family vacation happen before and after my conference sessions on Thursday and Friday.

Heather and Janelle will share acting-principal responsibilities in my absence.  Janelle will have the helm on Wednesday and Thursday and Heather will steer the ship on Friday.

Core Values
The new 2016 Marshall Values posters are up in both the workroom and in room 19.  They're also always available online via the Blue Note sidebar. Every time I look at them I'm pleased with all that the convey about what and how you feel about this place where we work.  Together.

I hope you'll take a few minutes during the next few days to read through them again and reflect, perhaps, on your role in ensuring we all live up to these excellent workplace standards.

Thanksgiving Luncheon
This somewhat disruptive but mostly enjoyable event will take place next week on Monday 07 November.  As always, we'll do our best to run it so that it impacts our schedule as minimally as possible.  Nevertheless, it will have some impact.  Always does.  Thanks for doing all that you can to get your classes to the cafeteria on time

Here's the schedule we've tried to keep the past couple years.  It's worked pretty well. I will try my best to remember to reset the bells to these times...

  • First eat: 11:35-11:55 play 11:55-12:15

Updates - 28 October 2016

Hello everyone,

Happy Friday!  Happy payday!  Happy Halloween weekend eve!

Hope you have fun doing whatever you've got planned.

Halloween stuff
Angelo's already forwarded to you our long-standing Halloween "policies" such as they are.  But, just for the record, here they are again:

If you are planning to incorporate Halloween into your teaching next week, please ensure that you recognize and honor each individual's position on this issue and their right to hold it.

You may not exclude from instruction any students who choose not to recognize Halloween.

Classroom-teachers who choose to allow their students to wear costumes at school on Monday may do so provided costumes meet the following criteria:
  • Costumes deemed unsafe for any reason will be required to removed. It is advisable that students wear school-appropriate attire beneath their costume. If students do not have a change of clothing, they will be required to stay in the office until parents arrive.
  • No costume may be worn which would in any way impede the student from moving safely and quickly out of the building in the event of an alarm.
  • Costumes must not obstruct vision or movement or in any way present a hazard to the student or other classmates. Masks covering any part of the face may not be worn.
  • Fake knives, swords, or guns may not be used as a part of any costume. Such items will be confiscated and may result in disciplinary action including but not limited to suspension from school.
  • Costumes must not be overly gruesome and overtly violent.
If you do choose to recognize Halloween on Monday next week, your students must abide by all of these policies. It is the classroom-teacher's responsibility to communicate the school's policies and expectations to students and their parents and to provide acceptable accommodations to all who choose to abstain.

If you choose to allow your students to wear costumes on Halloween, you must be diligent about doing the work of ensuring that each child's costume is safe and compliant with all school policies.

Thanks.

Grading & Assessment Follow-up
I'd like us to meet together as a faculty on 10 November at 7:45 in the morning to follow-up on how the first iteration of our new Standards-Based Grade Reports rolled out to parents during conferences.

I will provide donuts for you that morning because, well, just because.  Let's call it a "working" breakfast, akin to the "working" lunch we took together a few weeks back.  And also because I'd really like you to arrive on time because we probably want to have as much time to talk as possible.

Anyway, as you prepare for this time of reflection and dialog, I'd like you to focus your remarks and insights in the follow categories:
  • What positives can you relate regarding your experiences with the new standards-based grading system?
  • What should be changed to improve the standards-based grading system?
  • What positive feedback did you receive from parents regarding the new grade reports?
  • What did parents seem to misunderstand about the standards-based grades?

Calendar

  • Tuesday 01 Nov
    • Picture retake day in Fit Kids room, all day

Updates - 21 October 2016

Hello everyone,

Looks like our first real cold front of the season arrives on Sunday and will likely persist with rainy conditions through Monday.  Snowlevels will be quite high, but it's not unreasonable to expect a good  honest dusting above treeline Monday morning.

Always exciting whenever the snow starts to fall.

Boss's Day
Thanks, all y'all, for the lovely surprise and bag of clever Star-gifts for Boss's Day earlier this week.  I don't often think of myself as your boss.  But I guess I am.  It's was nice to read that most of you are okay with that arrangement.  You're all pretty darn awesome.  And I certainly wouldn't want to be the boss of any other group of people.

Lanyards
I think most of us have been gifted with a new Marshall-blue lanyard from the PTO.  I think they're very cool and a fun way to show off our school spirit.

But someone pointed out to me, if you lose your badge and it's attached to a Marshall lanyard, it will be super simple for a potentially malevolent finder to come here and wand themselves into our building and then have the run of the place.  That might not be such a good thing, ya know.

I'm not going to tell you to not use your Marshall lanyard, but if you're an individual who is at times inclined to misplace or lose your keys and/or badge (you know who you are), perhaps you might want to reconsider attaching it to your new Marshall lanyard.

United Way
Please consider making a contribution to our annual United Way campaign.  Thanks.

Search And Rescue
Coconino County Search And Rescue would love to have a special speaker visit your classroom to discuss/review the Hug-a-Tree concept with your students.  Please contact Robert Braudy at 201-665-0168 to schedule a time.

Parent University
Please take one last opportunity today or on Monday to remind your families about Parent University on Tuesday.

FOSS Forum
Don't forget to contribute your experiences and insights to the FOSS NG Science forum that we established a few weeks ago.  You may access the forum via the Blue Note sidebar or this link.

Calendar

  • Tuesday 25 Oct
    • Bus Evacuation Drills, probably in the AM at drop-off

Updates - 12 October 2016

Hello everyone,

Happy payday!  Happy long weekend!  Happy end of Parent-Teacher Conferences Week.  Hope it all went well and that you've got plans to spend your next four days off doing what you love in the company of those you love.

I've got nothing but good news for you today.

Walk To School Results
We won (if such a thing can be won)!  Seventy-six percent of our students walked to school last Wednesday morning, 120 more kids than the second-place school (Kinsey).  I guess that's pretty cool.

Best part of the event for me?  The amazing turn out by faculty and staff!  Thanks to all who participated.

Fire Safety Assembly
The Flagstaff Fire Department has been very eager to get into our school to conduct a Fire Safety Assembly of our primary grade students.  They weren't able to find a date on a Friday to come, so I gave them the only other time during the week when most of our primary classes have some time to come to an assembly, Monday from 1:00-2:00.

We've put in a request with Pinnacle to send over a couple extra folks to help us get the cafeteria turned around ASAP at 1:00 and hopefully the firefighters will be ready to go shortly thereafter.  We'll call our kinder, (firsts have specials), second, and third grade classes down by intercom probably around 1:10-1:15.  The program will be about 30-40 minutes in duration, so we should be able to get everyone out with some time left to let Sergio get set-up for Magnet Monday before 2:10.

Not an ideal situation, I know, but I think it will work, and it made the folks at FFD super happy to know they would be able to run through this program with our kids.  Thanks for enduring this disruption.  I trust it will be good stuff for our littles to learn.

Plus, I've never heard any of you complain whenever the firefighters show up...

Annual Parent Survey Results
More families than ever before (137) completed our annual Parent Satisfaction Survey back in May.  And they gave us great marks in every area.  Better still, their written comments were amazing and so full of praise for you and all that you're able to do for their kids.

Just listen to this stuff:
  • [Our daughter] feels comfortable in school... she likes school and her teacher
  • The magnet programs are WONDERFUL!!!
  • I can email the teacher with questions.
  • Keep up the good work!
  • The front office staff is friendly and helpful. The teachers do their best with what they have.

  • [Our child's teacher] was nice and easy to communicate with.

  • I most appreciate all the different learning activities my child's class offers.
  • At this time there isn't anything I would suggest to improve the school.  Marshall School itself, and staff, teachers, etc. are all doing a great job!
  • Everything is great!
  • The teachers are incredible.  I have no suggestions.  Marshall is wonderful!
  • I feel we have a great relationship with our student's teacher. Teachers and staff really care and it shows.
  • We love Marshall!  We can't wait to send our other kids here.
  • I like the variety of additional specials my student receives at Marshall.
  • I appreciate the welcoming environment at Marshall.  I love the music, dance, art and science programs and that the students are recognized and rewarded with special privileges, like the Blue Ticket lunch, for demonstrating good character and leadership.
  • I appreciate the extra magnet offerings that expose my child to activities outside the regular classroom.
  • I like the variety of programs available.
  • [Marshall is a] fun, interactive learning environment. Faculty and staff are friendly.

Updates - 07 October 2016

Hello everyone,

I cannot deny it, I love the change of the seasons. Lots of folks get pretty amped up when the aspens turn yellow; they are undeniably pretty. But I'm more inclined to feel like it's really starting to be fall when the oaks begin to turn, which they are beginning to do this week. Gambel oaks are too oft' overlooked, in my opinion, and are equally underrated for their beauty and as harbingers of the change of the season.

Glad to finally get that off my chest...

New State Science Standards
Got this email this week: "The ADE is pleased to announce that effective October 4, 2016, the 60 day window for public comment on existing Science Standard (2004) and Social Studies Standard (2005) has been opened. The public survey to provide feedback on existing standards will be available through December 3, 2016.

The ADE is also accepting applications for educators (K-12 and higher education) to serve on the revision committees for each of the content areas. The application for committee members will remain open for the duration of the revision process.

To provide feedback or to apply to serve on a review committee, please visit the Science and Social Studies Standards - Public Feedback page. Buttons to apply to serve on the review committee are at the bottom of the page."

Hope you'll take a few minutes to chime in with your opinion, or perhaps apply to serve on the revision committee, particularly in view of your recent experiences with the FOSS Next Generation Science kits.

United Way
No one's stepped up to coordinate our school's annual United Way campaign this year, so it falls to me to promote it, I guess.  Information about United Way should be forthcoming to your mailboxes soon.  Please consider donating to this worthy cause.  I will continue to remind you about this throughout the month of October.

Don't know about you, but my voter registration is current and up-to-date and I have every intention of voting early in the upcoming general election.  If you're not registered, you have until Monday 10 Oct. at midnight to do so.  I think you should.  It's pretty easy to do it online at www.servicearizona.com.

Conference Week Stuff
Pat in the cafeteria says they're doing sack lunches all week.  But kids will be eating in the cafeteria and going to the playground as usual each day because the Clothing Exchange will be in the Science Lab this year.  That's great!

Don't forget Wednesday's lunch schedule is super wonky:
  • 9:35-9:55 -- K-1 eat lunch
  • 9:55-10:15 -- K-1 on playground
  • 10:00-10:20 -- 2-3 eat lunch
  • 10:20-10:40 -- 2-3 on playground
  • 10:25-10:45 -- 4-5 eat lunch
  • 10:45-11:05 -- 4-5 on playground

During your Parent-Teacher Conferences, in addition to distributing Report Cards and talking with parents about student achievement and assessment, please also do the following three things (if they apply to any of your students), too:
  • Distribute Arizona Residency letters to parents who have not completed their residency affidavit this year.  Please encourage parents who get this letter to come to the office after their conference to complete this mandatory form.  We're happy to make free copies of their documentation!
  • Have parents who have not signed the Technology End User Agreement complete it at the time of their conference.  Please keep these and return any signed forms to the office at the end of each day.
  • Inform parents for whom you have Move On When Reading letters that their child could be retained at the end of third grade if their reading scores do not improve.  Ensure they get the letter to this effect which has been distributed to the teachers of all children to whom this applies.
Also, if you could do your level-best to "sell" Parent University to your parents during Conferences, that would be swell, too!

Updates - 30 September 2016

Hello everyone,

Well, there goes September.  And all but the last few moments of the first quarter grading period. And the green leaves on the trees.  And the warm mornings...

Tempus fugit, as they say.

Hope you have a nice weekend.  Carpe diem!

Fire Marshall Visit
We were the recipients of a surprise visit from the state Fire Marshal this week.  As you know, we failed our inspection.  We were officially written up in four areas: Ceiling clearances, Curtains/draperies, Workspace clearance around electrical equipment, and Appliances in classrooms.

The Fire Marshal also noted less formally that we should keep egresses clear, conduct fire drills on a monthly basis, and always keep the hallways devoid of furniture.

We have 10 days to fix the violations or incur "legal action" from the state, which could result in our closure.  I appreciate the efforts you've made to get your domains into compliance.  I know it sucked to have to remove (or treat) your curtains and, likewise, to get rid of (or move to an office space) your 'fridges and ovens and lamps.  I understand that we were not fully aware of these prohibitions prior to the Marshal's visit.  But I'm glad that you willingly removed them anyway, once we got the word that they didn't comply.  I'm getting the sense that each Marshal has his/her "pet" concerns and that they can seem rather arbitrary to us.  Nevertheless, it's all written in the Fire Code and, in the end, these Marshals are just doing their job, which is to help us ensure that our building is as safe as can be for all +/-625 of us who come to work/school here everyday.

I've informed the Marshal that we have made every effort to correct our deficiencies and that he is welcomed to return to our campus at any time to hopefully revise our rating.  I have not heard back from him and therefore do not know when he might choose to come back.  He might tell me, and if he does I will surely let you know.  But he might not.  So thanks for ensuring that your area meets the aforementioned criteria henceforth.

Fire Drill Note
Nice job with our drill this morning.  Just a couple notes:
  • Use both sides of our exit doors when leaving the building during a drill.  No need to politely keep to the right, there should be no upstream traffic into the building during a fire drill.
  • If you encounter locked gates or restricted/congested access points, such as we have during our past two drills when headed to the FHS ballfields, please do not allow classes to bottleneck as students wait to pass through.  Instead, please guide your students to a new location away from the building that you can get them to more quickly.

Route 22
Several of our morning and afternoon buses transfer students at other schools.  Route 22 takes on kids from two or three other buses at Kinsey School each morning and is not scheduled to arrive at school until 8:40 per the official FUSD routing sheet.  If any of the transfer buses are late to Kinsey, Route 22 ends up running late to Marshall.  Some mornings they get here at 8:45.  Sometimes not until 8:50.  It's a tough situation but not one that we're going to be able to rectify this school year.

Anyway, thing is, when teachers take attendance before Route 22 arrives it creates a real crazy situation for the front office.  It would be super helpful if y'all could hold off on taking attendance in the morning until after your sure your Route 22 kids have shown up.  Thanks.

Updates - 23 September 2016

Hello everyone,

Thanks again for being so expert at what you do.

Can't really express how thrilled I am with the consistently excellent instruction I'm seeing all day, everyday in nearly every corner of our building.  Just this week, on my (almost) daily walk-arounds, and during evaluations/observations, I've seen amazing Eureka Math lessons that have engaged entire classrooms is relevant learning and FOSS next-gen science lessons that have compelled students to participate in seriously rigorous science literacy and inquiry.  I've seen kids happy to come to school.  Kids, supervised and unsupervised, all walking in an orderly fashion in the halls.  Kids stoked to fundraise for their campus.  Teachers on their feet, smiling and interactive, as they work with small groups and large. Teachers reading aloud to students, voice acting every measure and beat of dialog and descriptive language. Classes headed off out into the field to do amazing things.

I AM EXCITED ABOUT WHAT'S HAPPENING AT MARSHALL SCHOOL THIS YEAR!

Once again, thanks for doing what you do, and for doing it so well.

Lots of little things on the Blue Note agenda today... Gonna try to get through them in fairly short order.

Grades and Report Cards
Ms. Overton corresponded with y'all earlier in the week to confirm our upcoming schedule for grades and report cards.  Per her email, Special Area class grades will be due by noon on 30 September.  The Grading Period ends on 07 October.  Attendance marks will roll-over at noon that day.  Teachers may begin printing report cards after that time.

Parent University
Ms. Poland corresponded with y'all earlier in the week about Parent University, which will take place on 25 October from 5:00-7:30.  The Parent Engagement Committee has been hard at work each week thus far this school year making plans for this important event.  I hope you will spend some time reading through her email entitled PLEASE READ - Parent University and that you will eagerly step up and volunteer for the support and participation needs she's outlined therein.

All Hands On Deck
We are officially, for perhaps maybe the fourth time in six years, fully and completely 100% hired at Marshall School.  As if Tuesday this week, we have no open positions and no pending resignations.  It's been my experience that this is an exceptionally rare occurrence around here and one that rarely lasts for more than a few days (last year, for instance, we never had even one day where we were fully hired).

TL;DR: We should all enjoy having all our employees hired while it lasts... and welcome our two newest members, Alex Stewart (parapro in Fisher/Baker) and Summer Marshall (parapro in Joe), we're stoked to have 'em aboard!

Evals and TPEC
Teachers, just a reminder: please make sure you've put your written lesson plans out somewhere where I can easily find them when I come in to observe you.  Don't forget, as we discussed in your pre-conference, the Lesson Plan component of the TPEC rubric requires that your plans be available to me to look over at the time of your formal evaluation.  Frankly, your written plans should always be in a place where they can easily be found... just in case you can't make it in on short notice and someone (sometimes me) has to step in for you last minute.

Also, with only a couple of exceptions, all certified personnel should now be able to go into TNL and accept their TPEC pre-conference data.  Don't forget, this is a two-step process.  Step One is: click the blue "Accept" button at the bottom the the "Employee Review and Sign Off" page.  Step Two is: click the "Mark Complete" box at the top of the "Employee Review and Sign Off" page.  If you've done both of the steps correctly, the "Mark Complete" box will say "Print Forms" from now on and the check mark next to "Employee Review and Sign Off" will turn from yellow to green.

TL;DR:  Put your plans where I can see them.  And, if any of your TPEC Pre-Conference check marks are yellow, you've missed a step.  Please go back and fix it.

FOSS Forum
A few folks have provided interesting anecdotal data to the FOSS Forum that we debuted in last week's Blue Note.  Please don't neglect to provide your insights to this online group.  I continue to believe that it will be a useful tool to us when it comes to making a decision about the outcomes of our ongoing FOSS NG Science pilot.

Faculty & Staff Picture Day
Thanks in advance to all faculty and staff for planning to be here on Wednesday morning by 8:00 to stand-in with the rest of us for our annual staff picture.  I'm going to wear my Marshall Can Do It shirt this year.  I hope you'll wear yours, or another of your Marshall staff shirts, so that we can all be all matchy-matchy together.

Remember, when it's all said and done, and I'm an old man on my deathbed, these pictures of my happy staff, and perhaps a few remaining fragile ancient memories of our halcyon days together, will be all I have left of this place.

TL;DR: Don't miss out on this chance to become a meaningful part of my dotage.  Come and have your picture taken with us on Wednesday at 8:00.

Parent Teacher Conference
We're soon to dive headlong into our most important home-school interaction of the school year: fall parent-teacher conferences.  We will dismiss school early on  10-12 October in order to allow you to have time to schedule conferences with as many of your families as possible.  On 10 and 11 October we will follow our typical early release day lunch and dismissal schedule and students will go home at 12:25.  On Wednesday 12 October, we will dismiss school at 11:10.  We will do all that we can to abide by the following schedule that day:
  • 9:35-9:55 -- K-1 eat lunch
  • 9:55-10:15 -- K-1 on playground
  • 10:00-10:20 -- 2-3 eat lunch
  • 10:20-10:40 -- 2-3 on playground
  • 10:25-10:45 -- 4-5 eat lunch
  • 10:45-11:05 -- 4-5 on playground

Walk To School Day

The County has ordained that Wednesday 05 October 2016 shall henceforth be known as Walk To School Day.  They have made arrangements with FUSD Transportation to have students with signed permission slips (to be sent home on 28 Sept) dropped off at the Armory on Thorpe Rd. that morning and escorted to school by Marshall faculty, staff, and a handful of NAU volunteers.

It would be super helpful if you could plan to walk with a group of students that morning.  If you could be at the Armory around 8:10-8:15, you would be able to gather a small group and walk back to the school with them with plenty of time remaining to be in your room before the bell rings.  If you're someone who doesn't start the day with kids, it would be great to have you at the Armory maybe a bit after 8:15-8:20 to walk with some of our bus kids whose buses tend to arrive later.

TL;DR: We always need teachers and staff members to help with this little Walk To School Day exercise which, honestly the County kind of imposes on us, always with little notice.  I'm grateful to you for being willing to help Marshall endure it and ensure that our kids are able to walk to school safely that on Wednesday 05 Oct.

Updates - 16 September 2016

Hello everyone,

Gosh.  It is nice to be at the end of a full-sized week, especially one that was so optimally accomplished.  Seems to me like many things went off without a hitch this week, elaborate and informative fieldtrips, awesome hands-on science lessons in the lab, positive pre-conference meetings, the always hectic, always exciting start of our Suzuki and Magnet Monday extracurriculars, and a super upbeat visit from a far-away unified school district which came here to learn from us about how we've so successfully put our Title 1 funding to work schoolwide to implement the various components of our improvement plan.

What's Working
I really enjoyed our time together during last Friday's somewhat impromptu "working" luncheon for teachers.  Still feeling a lot of gratitude toward y'all on the faculty for showing up to take a look at our new Core Values posters and for helping me get a sharper bead on what's going on around here.  I hope we can provide more opportunities for us all to get together like this going forward.

As promised, I'd like to reflect a bit in this week's Blue Note on what you said in your table groups last week, both in regard to what's working (and why) and what we can improve upon (and how).

As pertains to what's working, I was quite pleased on review to see that many if not most of your groups identified common ideas related to feeling "safe to be innovative" and that you have the "freedom" to be "collaborative" and "cooperative" as aspects of this place you appreciate.  I am glad you seem to recognize that your "autonomy" and the opportunities you have to "take chances" are both essential components to your role as a professional educator here at Marshall.  We're able to function this way (you're "not micromanaged") because you're all talented, dedicated, one-of-a-kind experts at what you do, and you tend to show up ready to do it every day.

I'm also pleased that many of your groups recognized that, within the culture of innovation and autonomy we've tried to cultivate here, some of our mandated programs and activities are working well, too.  Several groups noted that our "collaborative team time" and "RTI interventions" and "enrichment opportunities" as well as our "IDM process" are working for "all our kids" and that our "daily routines are in place" and that you're "supported" as you try to accomplish all the myriad things that you do with your students each week.

Finally, I was pleased to read so many comments related to our "climate of community" and our "acceptance and tolerance of differences."  I think that our "inclusion of all kinds of students and parents" and the fact that "new people feel welcomed" and "supported and loved" is what makes the beautiful "diversity" that we have here at Marshall work almost all the time.

What Can We Improve
I will readily acknowledge that there are many aspects of our school that we can improve upon, and I'm once again grateful to you for helping me identify what some of them are and, likewise, how we might go about making them better.

Based on your feedback on Friday, your concerns are multiple.  Many of them pertain to things that we are compelled to accept as top-down initiatives, programs, and policies from the district level.  Several groups mentioned concerns that "SPED kids are not adequately serviced" and "dual cert" other "SPED issues" such as "parapros" make your jobs more challenging.  Likewise, "class size" was mentioned as an area of concern as well.

I'm grateful to you for trying to understand that I "can't control" those things to any great degree.  Nevertheless, I hope you know, when our enrollment and/or SPED numbers merit going to bat for additional staffing, I've always been willing to do so and have fought for a position at the front of the line whenever it's been necessary.  Over the past six years we've added in, sometimes temporarily and sometimes permanently, several key members of our professional teaching staff by making urgent requests of the district to offset our class size and SPED count pressures by allowing us to hire new personnel.  To date this year, our counts have not met with that criteria.  However, if this changes going forward, so will my approach to the district.

Several groups mentioned the need for "clearer consequences" and/or "less subjective consequences for certain behaviors" and a better system for "conflict resolution" and "behavior support" should be implemented at Marshall.

I know that FUSD has recently published through Cathy Cox's office a behavior consequence matrix for secondary schools to use when managing behaviors on their campuses.  And it's my understanding that a similar matrix is in the works for elementary sites, though I have not seen it yet nor have my fellow admins and I been asked to give our input into the process of developing such a matrix.  I will make inquiries at upcoming admin meetings about this document and hope that it will soon be forthcoming and useful to us.  If not, I think it would be a good use of the PBIS Committee's time, collaborating with those in attendance at our monthly B-GDM meetings, to develop a tool of this kind of our own.

A number of your groups said you would like me to "seek feedback from staff more often" and that I should work harder to "break down barriers for staff to be willing to come to administration" and that many of you desire a greater role for teachers in "decision making" particularly in regards to "schedules [and] programs."

I think many of your suggestions, such as "take polls, surveys once in a while" and that we could allow "department chairs [to] make decisions on behalf of staff" or that we could form a "school solutions team to examine things we can control with regard to district problems" are all excellent steps forward that we should consider.

Beginning last year, I've scheduled monthly meetings with our two grade-level department chairs, along with a number of other folks who help coordinator our other departments at Marshall (RTI, SPED, ELL, and Magnets).  We will continue to meet as a Leadership Team on a monthly basis again this year.  This group has been of great assistance to me in helping me plan schedules, programs, and activities over the course of the last year and I believe they function well as an ad hoc School Solutions Team on your behalf and on behalf of our students.

Moreover, on the subject of decision-making, I remain ever hopeful that our longstanding and vital school committees, PBIS, Parent Engagement, Faculty Engagement, Site, and Science, have grown in their respective capacities over the course of the last several years, and have become better equipped each year at making decisions for our entire school regarding schedules, programs and activities.  I trust that as more of us join in with these groups whole-heartedly, they will become ever better and more proficient at making quality decisions and plans for us.

What I can't promise is that I will be able give much greater control to you for those aspects of decision-making that must be centralized, such as the discrete components of the master schedule, which due to the multitude of federal, state, and district statutes, mandates, and policies which much be accommodated (to say nothing of our unique extracurriculars and value-added magnet programs) and thus require my particular and close oversight.  I know that will disappoint some of you.  Nevertheless, please know, I am fully committed to working harder going forward to gain better insight into your desires, and to provide you with enhanced opportunities to give me your feedback related to the master schedule, especially as they pertain to what's best for our students, well in advance of its initial publication in April 2017.

Finally, some of your groups would like "a Coke machine to replace the Pepsi machine" in the teacher workroom which, sadly, is another thing I cannot do for you. Our vending contract is negotiated annually by FUSD at the district level.  I have neither the power nor the authority to change the character of our commercially vended items or the means by which they are dispensed to you.  Sorry.

Committee Reports To Site Council
Your Site Council would, once again, like to hear from the membership of our various school committees about your progress and activities this year.  They would like a plurality of your members  (rather than just one or two individuals) to attend Site Council on the evening your committee is scheduled to report.  Please be prepared to provide your progress report to the Council based on the schedule below.  Your committee membership will be notified of the date of the Site Council's monthly meeting at least a month prior to your report.
  • October -- PBIS & RTI
  • November -- Parent Engagement & Safety
  • December -- Science
  • January -- Faculty Engagement
  • February -- RTI
  • March -- PTO

Updates - 09 September 2016

Hello everyone,

It's always the short weeks that feel the longest, don't you think.  Can't put my finger on why that is.  But it is.  Hope you survived and are prepared to have a rejuvenating weekend.

FOSS Pilot Forum
I'd like us to begin to actively dialog on a regular and consistent basis about how our implementation of the FOSS Next Gen Science Kits is going.  In a few weeks, at the end of our trial period, we're going to need to make a democratic decision about whether or not to step out and purchase these kits, or continue to seek out a better science curriculum supplement for Marshall with further pilots and trials.  The next generation science standards are coming, whether we like it or not, and I think it's wise for us to get out in front of them, just as we did when I encouraged you to begin to look at the EngageNY Math materials a few years ago.

In order to foster conversation and the exchange of  ideas, I've created a simple forum for you to share anecdotes and insights about your personal experiences related to implementing the FOSS NG Science kits in your classroom with your students.  You can access the forum a number of ways.  There is a permanent link beneath the Important Pages heading in the Blue Note Blog sidebar to the FOSS Feedback Forum.  Or you can use the forum that I have embedded into this post below.

You need not be logged in or registered to leave a comment on the forum below. But, if you take a minute to create an account you will be able to customize the interface to some degree and will no longer be required to enter the 5-6 digit captcha code before your comments are posted. You will also be able to start new threads in the forum as a registered member.

Updates - 02 Sept 2016

Hello everyone,

Have a nice three-day weekend.

You've certainly earned it.

PBIS
Below are a few guidelines, developed recently by your hard-working PBIS Committee, for our Behavior Management Process at Marshall Elementary. Please read through and feel free to email any of the coaches listed below if you have questions about how all of this works at our school.

  • Tier 1 – All Kids Blue Tickets Classroom Expectations (classroom management, “bucks”, clip-up charts, etc.) School-wide Expectations Polk School Website Communication with parents (phone calls, agenda, clear notification of behaviors) Keep a running record of incidents, communication, and strategies used. We will need this documentation throughout the process.
  • Tier 2 – At Risk Kids (when all Tier 1 strategies are ineffective) Tier 2 is not only for misbehavior. Please bring to the group any student who you think is at risk because of their home life (depression, anxiety, etc.) Students with an IEP or 504 plan should be brought directly to their case manager. (Laura, Amanda, or Nancy) Don’t wait too long. We don’t want the student getting discouraged (OR YOU!!!!). Refer to B-GDM with Tier 2 Behavior Support Request Form (located in the side bar of the Bluenote – feel free to print a few to have on hand) During the waiting period before the meeting, email a coach (Sheila White, Laura Paez, Ellen Hobson, Joel Axler, Nancy McCleskey, Renda Fisk) for some strategy planning. Come to meeting where we can offer support and ideas for new strategies. Cycle of intervention should last a reasonable amount of time. (This will depend on the student.)
  • Tier 3 – Kids in chronic crisis. When Tier 2 strategies are exhausted, a Behavior –IDM will take place for that student.

Transitions
I'm pleased to report that we've worked through the bulk of the special-class transition challenges that we experienced during the first couple weeks of school.  Still a few areas that we're trying to tighten up, so please remember: your student teachers, Praxis pre-service teachers, parapros, and general aides should all be available to assist us in this process.  Pretty much anyone with an FUSD/NAU badge is okay to perform this service during the school day.

On that note, we're going to hope to soon extend to our students, beginning with our most mature and working down through the grade levels, the same kind of expectation of independence and self-sufficiency that we already commonly place on them during RTI, lunch recess, Magnet Monday, and during other transitions throughout the school day.  I think it's reasonable to expect, with continual encouragement and reinforcement of our PBIS guidelines, that most of our students will be able to move themselves between our special classes with minimal oversight soon.  It will surely take some time to prepare them for this new level of independence, but I think we've proven over time with RTI and the other opportunities that already exist for them to self-transport, that the great majority of our students will be able to handle this expectation just  as well.

Festival Of Science
Please be sure to review Jillian Worssam's recent email entitled Flagsatff [sic] Festival of Science - In School Speaker Programs to find out how to schedule speakers for your science classes.

Updates - 26 August 2016

Hello everyone,

What can I say, 'twas a bumpy week this week 'round the ol' elementary school, wasn't it?

Our wheels got a little wobbly round about Thursday, what with our bleary-eyed arrival early that morning following Open House on Wednesday... on top of the all the stress we're feeling about our new gradebooks and report cards... and then there's FOSS... and the radically new, radically compressed one-week Special Class Schedule with its five-minute margins... plus all the new kids in each of our domains, and the new routines, and the new obligations and expectations that every new school year always brings.

And so, it got bumpy.  And wobbly.

I'm amazed and proud of you all for muscling through it.  I really am.  Just reconfirms to me what I wrote to you for our First Faculty Meeting a couple weeks ago (actually just 13 days ago at the time of this writing)...

"Few if any other elementary schools in the region face such a plate full of challenges, much less challenges at the scale that we have here at Marshall. That's not bragging. And it's certainly not complaining. It's simply our reality.

Marshall is special. It takes a special kind of person to work here.

It really does."

Well, just so you know: you are one of those Special People.  After this week, you've officially earned that attribution, no matter how new or old you might be to our company.

And I'm so glad you are and that you have.

Thanks, once again, for muddling through it with me.  You're the best.

Faculty Meeting
Please, no wagering
We will meet together as a faculty on Thursday morning, 01 September, at 7:45 in the Library. There will be a very full agenda that morning, and you will need to sign-in as present for a couple of things (required by law), so please do all you can to ensure you arrive on time.

Karin Eberhard will be here to speak to you about FUSD PR... Nurse Witt will review our blood-borne pathogens protocols (as required by law)... Counselor McCleskey will review our student and staff sexual harassment policies (as required by law)... Music-teacher White will review our schoolwide PBIS initiative and behavior referral procedures... and Amy Dries be present to represent the FUSD HR Department... I forget what she's coming to tell us... but I'm sure it's important.

I'm Out
On Tuesday, Lisa has her six-weeks-post-op check-up with the the specialist who did her surgery in Phoenix.  I thought it would be nice to drive her down there, and hopefully hear some good news about how her her prolonged recovery is going, and then spend a little time together, just the two of us, ya know.

I'll be out all day Tuesday and Wednesday.  Back to work on Thursday morning for the faculty meeting.

By the way, many anonymous folks in FUSD (I suspect perhaps some of you), generously gave Lisa over 100 hours of donated leave recently to help her bridge the gap of lost time at work during her FMLA leave.  Can't thank you enough.  Lisa literally wept happy tears when told of your many kindnesses the other day. Your compassion and generosity have helped her recovery in more ways than you know.

Three-oh-one
FYI: To all who are eligible, the first 301 pay-out will be on your 14 September paychecks.

ADE's FAQ for Implementing Arizona's Science Standard
Assistant Superintendent Walton distributed a document entitled FAQ for Implementing Arizona's Science Standard to those of us in attendance at this week's Elementary Admin meeting.  It's a concise review of all that we've discussed over the course of the past year, and also, I think, a pretty valid affirmation that we're on the right course with what we're trying to do here at Marshall, especially when it comes to our FOSS pilot.

I highlighted what I thought were a few key things in the document.  I've scanned my copy, and if you care to have a look, you can open/download it right here.

Updates - 19 August 2017

Hello everyone,

Most of you know Billy-Bob (not his real name).  He's been our student for several years now.  One of a kind.  Endearing.  Clever.  A bit off-center.  Special.  You know, everything we like in a Marshall student.

He got off the bus the other morning and walked toward the school with the black shoelace on his left shoe flapping along behind him.  As he approached me he stuck his untied shoe out toward me and asked, "Will you tie my shoe, Mr. Coe?"

"Sure," I said as I automatically got down on one knee and began to lace it.

Then it occurred to me, as I was making the bunny's ears, I think Billy-Bob's a fourth grader this year.  So I asked him, "Billy-Bob, am I tying your shoe just to be nice, or do you really not know how to tie your own shoe?"

"Oh, you're just being nice, Mr. Coe.  Thanks."

At least he said thanks.

Open House
As we discussed at our first faculty meeting, we will forego APTT meetings with our families this year and hold a more traditional Back-To-School Open House on Wednesday 24 August from 5:00-6:30 instead.

District Relations Coordinator, Karin Eberhard, contacted me earlier in the week to let me know that FUSD Superintendent Dirksen and several members of his cabinet (assistant superintendents, department directors, and Ms. Eberhard) intend to visit our school that evening.  So get your dogs and ponies ready because it's time to break our your Sunday best.

We'll begin with everyone (teachers and parents) together in the gym, from 5:00 until about 5:30.  I will address our parents briefly and then turn everyone loose to visit with all y'all in your classrooms until about 6:30.  There will be several announcements toward the end of the evening to let folks know we're turning off the lights and locking the doors at 6:30.

All certificated faculty should plan to attend this event and have their domains prepared accordingly.  We are unable to provide compensation to classified staff who may choose to attend.

Bees and wasps
We had a nest of western yellowjackets in the Heritage Garden eradicated this week after a spate of stings.  But the garden is still teeming with insects, mostly bees, but there are still wasps around, too.

I'd rather not have all the flowers removed from the garden, but if we continue on this 5-6 stings-per-week trend-line, I guess I may have to.  However, it's my preference to keep the garden intact, it's such a lush, verdant place right now.

Therefore, I'd like to encourage you, instead, to have your children move quickly through the space, keeping to the sidewalk and not roaming about among the flowers (tempting as this may be) as they head directly to the playground.  Hopefully this will minimize our opportunities to interact with the insects.

PBIS at Marshall
Sheila White, our ever-capable coordinator of all-things PBIS, writes, "We are off to a great start with student behaviors at Marshall. Thanks to you all for reminding students what our expectations are around campus.

"Blue Ticket Fridays will begin next week, Friday, August 26th. Make sure you are recognizing positive student behavior by giving them a Blue Ticket. Please make Ellen and Sheila aware if you no longer have your can to collect tickets. On that note, we need to make several collection cans for our new staff members. If you have any metal coffee cans with plastic lids, please drop them to Ellen so we can have sufficient stock.

"New PBIS posters have arrived and we will begin posting them around the school soon. When you see them, stop and show the students and use the opportunity as a teaching moment for expected behaviors. You can review these by using the link to PBIS in the Bluenote."

Gradebook Training
TrueNorth Logic Course #49230, Elementary Standards-based Gradebooks, will held again on 23 August (session #33864) from 4:00-5:30 at Coconino High School in room 200.  Chelsea Lohr and Heather Overton will facilitate.

United Way
The annual United Way fundraising campaign will kick off in September and FUSD is seeking building coordinators at each site.  If you're willing to help with this effort, please let Sylvia Johnson (ext. 6152) or Karin Eberhard (ext. 6004) know of your willingness.

NCTM Conference
Two registrations and (two-per-room) hotel accommodations are available to Marshall teachers for the 27-28 October NCTM regional math conference in Tempe.  If you're interested in attending, please let me know prior to Wednesday 24 Aug.

Committees
Thanks for signing up to participate as a member of one of our school committees this year.  The work done by these groups is absolutely essential to our ability to function as a school.  Remember: if you do AM or PM duty more than one day per week, you may choose to sign up for just one committee, otherwise all certificated faculty should sign up for two.

If you don't find your name on the lists below it's probably because you haven't signed up yet, please do so ASAP.  Your participation is not just required, it's desperately needed.

Many hands do make short work, after all.
