Hello everyone,

 Friday, pay-day, three-day weekend... 

 Happy Trifecta-Friday!

 Well, week-three of the school year certainly wasn't without its challenging moments, what with our prolonged power-outage, Galileo and AIMSWEB testing glitches, last-minute reroutes of dozens of bus-students and the like... and yet, as always, you (individually) persisted through it all and Marshall (collectively) has, once again, weathered every storm that has beset us.

 In case you haven't heard (or don't "like" Marshall Magnet School on Facebook), here's what caused our power outage: a big dump-truck, delivering a massive load of rain-soaked (read: less viscous) cinders to the house across the street (the one that's being renovated), lifted its bed to its maximum angle to deliver its load, right into the overhead power-lines, blowing a major fuse (but thankfully not a transformer) in the line.  

 We were told initially that our power would be out for 2-3 hours, well past dismissal time, but APS was able send over a lineman almost immediately who was able to replace the fuse and restore our power in just over an hour instead.

 High Praise
It's been so satisfying for me to see so many of you implementing our Morning Math routine already this year.  

 Likewise, it has been truly inspiring to see such real, solid teaching occurring all day long, often from the very first minute up to the very end of the school day, being done by teachers who are up-and-about, interactive, and engaged in close proximity to their students.

 All I can think when I see this in room after room throughout out the school-day is: Marshall teachers really are the best.

 Laminator
Mr. McAllister writes, "Laminator film is on the way and we hope to be able to continue putting protective covers on paper by Thursday, 04 September."

 PBS / Management Plans
Nearly all of you have submitted your classroom management plans online by now.  Thanks!  It's satisfying to me to see our Tier 1 (Safe - Responsible - Respectful) framework being incorporated into so many of your plans.

 Please remember to distribute Blue Tickets to students demonstrating appropriate behaviors in our common spaces (halls, cafeteria, playground, and restrooms) at a rate of 2-3 tickets per day. 

 The PBS Committee met this past Monday and had a great meeting wherein we reviewed and revised a few of the details of our Tier 1 and Tier 2 programs. Look for a review of our PBS program next week, right here on the Blue Note.

Hello everyone,

Happy Friday!  

 It truly is a beautiful day in the neighborhood.

 I'm not at all ashamed to tell you: I like to imagine myself a disciple of Fred Rogers.  I grew up watching Mister Roger's Neighborhood almost every day and had many of his records and song-books as well.  Likewise, I have, in more recent years, enjoyed re-watching many of his shows and singing many of his songs along with my daughter, too.  In fact, her favorite stuffed animal-companion at night has, for many years, been a Daniel Striped Tiger puppet; this has always warmed my heart.

 There was a time, not so long ago, when Fred Rogers and his television show were ridiculed and parodied by some.  I am glad that it seems our collective perception of him appears to have shifted in recent years, and that today his legacy, the body of his work, as well as his ideals, seem to have become more well-respected and honored as the years have passed. 

 I have always, from the very beginning, felt a real kinship with Fred Rogers, and remember quite fondly the specifics of many of the things he did and said, and the places he visited on his show over the years. Foremost among my memories of him is his persistent, gentle insistence that you are special just the way you are, and that the way you feel is important.

 I was reminded of Mister Rogers earlier this week, when I read the following quote on one of my favorite websites:

 "We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It's easy to say, 'It's not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.' Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes."

 To me, this quote seems to perfectly describe our first two-plus weeks together at Marshall School.  Thanks to all of you, we are off to another fairly smooth start to the school year.  Why?  Because wherever you saw a need, or were told that there was a need, you did not presume that it was not your problem, or balk when someone asked to help. You responded to it.  Willingly.  I love that about y'all. 
  • Special area teachers, for your willingness to forego some of your collaboration time for a little while to help our kindergarten students transition into school more successfully... you are my heroes.
  • Classroom teachers, for acting with kindness and compassion and for creating safe and secure places for all of our students (and also for enduring an ill-timed broken copier, too)... you are my heroes.
  • Kindergarten, magnet, and specials teachers, for your willingness to help get 600 kids safely out of the school and on to their buses at dismissal every single day... you are my heroes.
  • Steve McAllister, Erin Macdonald, Joel Axler, and Laura Paez, for acting quickly, and often without being asked, to intervene to find our lost, and calm our frustrated or frightened children this week... you are my heroes.
  • RTI Specialists Grant and Hanno, for enduring endless off-site trainings, and seemingly endless benchmark assessments for every child in the school... you are my heroes.

Field-trips
Principals were advised at our most recent Admin Council meeting that it would be a "good idea" to encourage our teachers to get all of their bus field-trips scheduled with transportation ASAP.

Classroom Management Plans
Dawn Edwards will be back at work next week and she and I would like to be able to look at your Classroom Management Plans together at some point.  If you haven't already turned in a written copy of your plan to me or (better yet) completed the form online, please do so immediately.

Galileo
Our new benchmark assessment, Galileo, will be a valid assessment on the TPEC for grade-levels that use this test.  

FUSD Subaru Raffle
Members of the PTO leadership have raffle tickets for an FUSD fundraiser that will be raffling a brand-new Planet Nissan Subaru Forester.  Tickets are $25.00 each or 5 for $100.00.  Only 3200 tickets will be sold.  If you're interested in purchasing a ticket, please let Malinda or a member of the PTO leadership know.

Faculty Meeting
We will meet together again on the morning of 18 Sept at 7:45.  Members of the FUSD School Board and Administration team will be present.

Updates -- 15 August 2014

Hello everyone,

 I find my self perplexed on a regular basis of late when I look at the calendar and find that it's still just the middle of August.  Quite strange to now be done with our first full week of school at at this point in the calendar year, don't you think?

 And yet, I continue to sense that we're off to a very good start, and that the majority of our students and families are happy (if not genuinely relieved) to be back at Marshall for another school year.

 I was standing in the parking lot across the street yesterday, just to keep an eye on our traffic patterns during intake time. It was really nice to watch so many of our families going through their morning drop-off routines together.  Such an abundance of kisses and hugs, smiles, and I-love-yous being exchanged.  Marshall's not without its share of dysfunction, I know, but we're certainly fortunate to be a part of such a typically friendly, generally loving, and mostly-amiable community nevertheless.

 Faculty Meeting
Teachers will meet on the morning of 21 August for our first AM faculty meeting of the school year.  We will be be discussing bullying and harassment and the new Galileo program at that time.  If you have questions about 301 hours, Classroom Site Fund or Teacher Performance Pay Plan monies, we can dialog some more about these concerns at that time, too.  Might be helpful to know your questions in advance if you'd like an answer from me on Thursday.  Feel free to email me prior to our meeting.

 2-hour Professional Development
Teachers will get together again on Friday, 22 August, for our first two-hour professional development seminar.  We will continue our in-service training in Academic Parent Teacher Team meetings at that time.  Amy Hanno and Rochelle Bronson, both APTT-trained instructors, will be our facilitators from 1:00-3:00.

 Open House (Connect To School Night)
The Parent Involvement Committee met this past Monday to begin planning the logistics for our upcoming APTT-inspired open house night.  In an effort to keep you apprised of all that's being planned and prepared for that night, our meeting notes are provided below:

The event will be called Connect To School Night in lieu of Open House and every effort will be made to help parents understand that the purpose of the event will be to create stronger and more advantageous home-school partnerships during initial Parent-Teacher Team Meetings that evening.

 The schedule for the evening will be as follows:

 5:30-6:15 Primary grades Parent-Teacher Team Meetings in classrooms.

 6:30-7:15 Intermediate grades Parent Teacher Team Meetings in classrooms.

 There will be NO parent meeting in the gym; Coe will drop in on Team Meetings, as will special area teachers.

 Students will not attend Parent-Teacher Team Meetings.

 Students will attend childcare in Gym or Fit Kids or Science Lab.

 Parents will be asked in advance on several occasions to RSVP for childcare on this Night.

 Bianco, Paulsen and Ronn will coordinate childcare.

 (Sylvia Johnson has informed me that it is simplest to employ parapros and aides for this work as they have already been fingerprinted and backgrounded.)

 Classified staff who participate will complete a separate timesheet for this event and be paid at their regular hourly-rate.

 Interpreters will be sought for our SEI classrooms.

 Ronn will be available and will attempt to find others to provide this service.

 Resources that will be needed for the evening:

 A claim-check name-tag system will be used to ensure students are carefully kept track of and picked up by the appropriate person at the end of the Night.

 We are in need of someone to procure these tags.

 Ronn will attempt to secure Mountain Line bus vouchers for families in need.

 Communications prior to the Night:

 Coe will develop several send-home flyers and one Marshall Magnet newsletter to deliver to families over the course of the 3-4 weeks prior to the Night.

 Robo-calls, announcement TV, Facebook, and the school blog will also be used to convey information about the Night.

Tier I PBS
We will continue to use our Blue Ticket incentive program to recognize and reward positive behaviors in the common places in our school.  All staff, teachers, parapros and support staff alike should be recognizing positive behaviors by distributing Blue Tickets at a rate of 2-3 per day. 

 Please remember: this program has demonstrated its ability to be of great value to our whole community.  It's essential that we continue to implement it every day.  Tickets were placed in mailboxes last week.  Should you run out, new Blue Tickets are always available in the workroom.  Help yourself.

 EpiPen
According to Wikipedia, "an epinephrine autoinjector (EpiPen) is a medical device used to deliver a measured dose (or doses) of epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) using autoinjector technology, most frequently for the treatment of anaphylaxis."

 We now have an EpiPen available on site for the treatment of emergency anaphylaxis.  It's located in the nurse's office on the wall near the restroom.

 By way of reminder, we have also had for some time now, a defibrillator on site.  It's located in the hallway adjacent to the Cafe-gym-a-torium.

Hello everyone,

Happy end of the first "week" of school!

Thanks for doing all that you (individually) did to get us (collectively) off to another super-smooth and easy start to the new school year.  This year, with our foreshortened summer, lots of our parents, even more than last year, observed that, "It seems like we never left."

In a lot of ways, that's a very good thing.

You'd think, after just two days of school, I'd have next-to-nothing to share with you.

You'd think...  But that would not be the case.  There's lot's of important information below:

Front Door
Our main front door keycard access point decided to bust during intake on the first day of school  The part to replace it is on order but will not be delivered and installed until sometime next week at the earliest.

This means, if you attempt to access the school through that door after hours with your keycard, you will not be able to get in.  However, the doors to the school office entrance are working just fine.  Please enter the building after hours that way for the time being.

 Specials Schedule
The FINAL-FINAL minor revision to the 2014-2015 Specials Schedule is done and available online [Week A] [Week B] and in the sidebar.

Engage NY
Many of you have expressed an interest in using the Engage NY math curriculum as a supplement to your Envision math curriculum.  We are looking into our most cost-effective options to have printed one set of the curriculum per grade level.  Should have something for you to use soon.  Meantime, please refrain from printing gobs of stuff... just print what ya gotta. K?

Math Training
FYI: A 301-eligible class, Planning preK-5 Math Curriculum, is available for registration through TrueNorth Logic via your TPEC login.

Teacher Duty
I forwarded you a copy of the year-long AM/PM Teacher Duty Schedule earlier in the week.  It's available in the sidebar and via the link above, too.

Laminator
Please, also recall the note about the new laminator that I sent you earlier in the week:
I forgot to mention the new laminator [during our staff meeting].  We’ve had it since late last year, but we’re just now getting the hang of it. As with all laminators, it’s a persnickety beast.  It was also very expensive and we incurred most of the cost for it ourselves (Co-op paid for a bit of it, too… long story).  Anyway, we want it to last a long time.  So here’s the deal:  you’re welcomed and encouraged to use it (that’s what it’s for after all).  But BEFORE you do so for the first time you MUST talk with Travis Pinn or Erin Macdonald FIRST.  Please note: They will NOT laminate for you, but they will give you a quick rundown on how the machine operates and a few precautions you can take to avoid bricking it.  WARNING: If you use the laminator without having THE TALK first, and you bust it we just might make you pony-up the $1600.00 for the next one.  Capish?

If you haven't already delivered your Professional Expectations form to my inbox (the wire one next to my office door is always best, by the way), they are due TODAY.  If you misplaced your form, you may download a new one here.

Classroom Management Plans
It's helpful to both Dawn Edwards and I (as well as to the entire team during B-GDM meetings) to have a copy of your classroom management plan available for review.

First Faculty Meeting - 05 August 2014

Hello everyone,

We're going to get together as a group for a couple hours on TUESDAY morning, August 5th from 10:00-12:00, after the all-FUSD welcome-back meeting at COCONINO High School (which is currently slated to run from 8:00-9:00 AM) BEFORE district-level meetings for various staff (which have blocked out 1:00-3:00).  
Our meeting shouldn't take too long.  If you don't have other meetings (and most of you don't), you can work in your rooms the balance of the day afterward.

Please bring your laptop to our First Faculty Meeting.  It will come in super-handy.  Together, we will review most of our important stuff online, set a few bookmarks, save a tree or two, and leave it at that.

Of course, please feel free to print these things out (or not), either before or after we meet... If you like.  Totally up to you.  But in an effort to save expensive paper, invaluable support-staff time, my time (for whatever it's worth), as well as wear-and-tear on our dearly-beloved, oh-so-delicate copier, I will link to them here, and let you use them when/as you see fit.

      • CSF activities must be directed at the goal of improving student achievement and must be completed outside the contract day.  Activities will be available for sign-up via TrueNorth Logic's TPEC website.  Regional, state, and national conferences are not eligible for CSF credit.
  • Recess Schedules (unchanged from 2013-14)
    • The following are included as part of your mandatory instructional minutes:
      • K: one AM & one PM 15-min. recess; one 10-min. PM rest time
      • 1-3 one AM & one PM 15-min. recess
      • 4-5 one AM or PM 15-min. recess
    • Recess times should be indicated in your daily/weekly plans
    • Please: 
      • move and scan while on duty
      • No clumping, no texting
      • All adults on duty must wear yellow safety vest

      • Tax-credit funded activities must be extracurricular and non-graded
      • Tax-credit activities should nevertheless have goals that are standards-based
