Hello everyone,
Thanks for being awesome.
I have been so uplifted and encouraged this school year, seeing the amazing teaching that you're doing. Whether it's during my daily walk-arounds, when I consistently encounter engaging, high-quality instruction taking place every minute of the day in almost every classroom I visit, or during your annual evaluation lessons, when I'm able to spend a full hour or more watching you do what so many of you do so well.
I am reminded, at these times, why I continue to do this job. It's because of the admiration I hold for you and the expertise and passion that you bring each day to your jobs.
You really are the best.
FUSD School Board Policy GBEB-RB
Otherwise known as The Employee Dress Code, FUSD School Board policy GBEB-RB was revised in July 2013 and, at that time, it was greatly simplified in its language. Still, it's a dress code, and therefore it remains a very particular standard, a set of instructions if you will, which describe how we should all be dressed while at work.
I'll admit, throughout my time as your principal at Marshall, it really hasn't been my habit to pay to much mind to policy GBEB-RB when it comes to evaluating your modes of dress. In fact, I can say that I have been generally pleased (and even occasionally entertained; what happened to the traveling-pants?) with the ways in which each of you has chosen to express your individuality by way of your personal fashion choices for work.
But it was brought to my attention earlier this week that I have, in fact, been remiss in enforcing policy GBEB-RB at Marshall School and that I must, henceforth, do so or face formal censure.
Therefore, in order to avoid an official sanction, and because it is an undeniable requirement of our collective employment in FUSD, I think it's important for us all to be reminded of The Employee Dress Code at this time. It is, after all, like all policies, never to be selectively applied
to discrete members of our ranks, but instead applies to each of us, wholly, equally, and without bias, as a basic condition of our employment, to certified, classified, and administrative staff alike.
It reads:

The Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) employs a district-wide dress code to support employee safety and promote educational professionalism. Educational professionalism defines the District and sets the expectation of how it is perceived by students, parents, co-workers, community members, vendors, potential new hires, and government officials. Therefore, appropriate personal dress is required of all employees, student teachers and volunteers.

Below is a guidelines of inappropriate dress code items; however, it is not an all-inclusive list. Principals and Directors are afforded the ability to make determination of appropriate personal dress for their departments/locations in recognition of unique school and community events. For example, some positions require specific dress, such as closed-toed shoes, uniforms, outdoor gear, athletic clothes, and protective equipment. These specific requirements are communicated upon hire, and throughout the year, by the employees' Principal or Director.

| |
|
|
 | | |
|
|
~ Revealing and see-through clothing.
| |
|
|

Dress must be appropriate for the season (for example: winter boots with safe soles for snow/ice conditions vs. high heels). If a school has a student dress code (Marshall Student Handbook, page 9), the employee level of dress should meet those requirements as well.

|
 | | |
|
|
If you need clarity on an item, ask your principal or director for guidance prior to wearing it to avoid dressing inappropriately.

Failure to adhere to this guideline will result in disciplinary action including, but not limited to: verbal warning, being sent home to change, a letter of direction, and further actions for multiple offenses.

Thanksgiving Lunch
We'll serve our annual Thanksgiving Lunch to our students and their families on Thursday 12 Nov. The flyer that food services sent home only indicated that the luncheon would occur during our scheduled lunch periods, from 11:35-12:55. This is likely to be an insufficient amount of time to pull this off, as historically we've had a lot of primary-grade parents attend, and somewhat fewer intermediate parents.
In the past, we've started earlier and ended later, but had a lot of down-time in between groups. We're going to try and tighten things up some this year and hopefully run a lunch schedule that's a bit less disruptive to all-else that's going on around here that day. Based on what's happened in years past, we think the schedule we've devised will work.
Here's what we'll send home via flyers and robo-calls to our families next week:
- Kindergarten: Eat: 11:15-11:40; Play: 11:40-12:00
- First: Eat: 11:35-11:55; Play: 11:55-12:15
- Second & Third: Eat: 12:05-12:25; Play: 12:25-12:55
- Fourth & Fifth: Eat: 12:35-12:55; Play: 12:55-1:15
Laptops
Sounds like new laptops are on the way soon for teachers. Mr. McAllister has provided you with Airserver activation codes this week. Some cleaning up of your existing machine should be done ASAP, and you should have instructions about how to do that so that your data is ready to be transferred to your new laptop when it arrives, too.
Your Microsoft OneDrive is the recommended place to put your important stuff so that you don't lose anything in this process. Google Drive or Dropbox would work well, too, I think.
Chairs
Please remember: the whole "no chairs in the hall" thing wasn't just a one time thing to get us out of hot-water with the fire marshal, it's an ongoing regulation. Please don't leave your chairs in the hallways. As soon as you're done using them (meaning just as soon as there's not a butt occupying it) all chairs should be stowed back in your classroom. This is a safety/evacuation concern, not just me or the marshal being picky. Thanks.
More Middle School Stuff
Mary K Walton has asked that fifth grade teachers provide "their reaction to the information provided to them and parents regarding middle school and high school programs. Was it beneficial?"
Please send your reactions to me ASAP and I will pass them along at our upcoming Admin Council meeting on Monday.
TPEC
Two weeks ago, I mentioned in the Blue Note that most teachers still needed to "sign off" on their TPEC preconference data.
This week, I sent a whole bunch of teachers another reminder to sign in to TPEC and "sign off" on their pre-conference data.
Nonetheless, based on what I can see in TPEC (too many blue icons, not enough green checks), a whole bunch of you still need to do so.
If you're still puzzled about how to accomplish this, and your peers are unable to help you get it done , please come and see me and I'll walk you through it.
Else-wise, please do so pronto. As in today.
Mandatory ALL STAFF Meeting
We've been required to schedule a mandatory All Staff Meeting for Friday, 20 Nov. at 1:00. We have very little information about what will transpire at this meeting, but we know our local wellness guru, Katie Wittekind, and FUSD Assistant Superintendent, Bob Kuhn, will both be there.
It has been repeatedly stressed that this meeting is mandatory for ALL STAFF. Classified staff should submit a separate timesheet for their time that day.
In view of the number of folks who should be present, I think we'll set up in the Gym.
