Lockdown Procedures

• When the announcement “This is a lockdown” is made over the intercom, immediately close and lock your door. Be sure to sweep-up any students in the halls in vicinity of your classroom.
• If a lockdown occurs when you are on the playground you will be locked-out of the building. Make no attempt to re-enter. Evacuate all students to the Flagstaff High School campus (see image at-right) and await law enforcement or notification that it is safe to return to the school.
• Do not make any attempt to inquire if this is a drill or a legitimate lockdown; follow the procedures outlined below regardless. 
• If you encounter a student in the hallway as you are closing your classroom door, bring that student into your classroom, whether they are yours or not. In the event of a lockdown, members of the Crisis Team have been assigned to check restrooms and the gym and will retrieve these students and escort them to a safe and secure area.
• Move your students as far away from and out of the direct line-of-sight of your classroom door as possible. The portal windows on classroom doors should be covered at all times.
• If the fire alarm sounds during a lockdown: STAY PUT, DO NOT attempt to evacuate.
• DO NOT use your cell phone to post to any social media websites during a lock down. 
• DO NOT answer cell phone calls from parents during a lockdown.
• Wait for the office to contact you via your classroom telephone. This may take some time and, in the event of a real emergency, frankly may not occur at all. 
• When you are contacted, a member of the office staff, or a member of the Crisis Team, will ask if you have all of your students. Speak quietly. If you do not have all your homeroom students, please tell the office who you are missing. If you have other teachers’ students in your room, please tell the office who you have. 
• Do not panic if your students are misplaced. You must trust they will all be safe and secure somewhere in the building.
• In the event of a real lockdown emergency it may be impossible to make a thorough accounting of the whereabouts of all your students. It is imperative that you take responsibility for any/all students you encounter.
• Wait for police to sweep your classroom (they will enter with a master key), or for an announcement over the intercom from a member of the office staff or Crisis Team member, or for a telephone call directly "From Marshall Elem" to your classroom telephone, informing you that the lockdown is over before opening your door. DO NOT answer a knock at your door for any reason. NEVER open your door or respond verbally to anyone through your door during a lockdown even if they identify themselves as "Flagstaff Police." 
• In some circumstances, a member of the office staff or Crisis Team, or a law enforcement officer may use a master key to unlock your door. It is reasonable to assume that an individual in possession of a key to your door can be trusted as safe. The principal or a member of the Crisis Team will make every effort to accompany police at this time.
• DO NOT use a color-card of any kind under your door. Do not indicate your presence to anyone outside of your classroom during a lockdown except via your classroom telephone.  If a student becomes sick or needs to use the restroom during a lockdown you should do you best to attend to their needs as you are able within your classroom.
