Updates -- 28 Sept. 2012

Friday. Payday.

Mmhmm.

TPEC Preconferences
Many of you have looked at the post/video about signing off on your TPEC preconference document.  If you've already done so and completed your sign-off, thanks!  If you haven't, please review the video and get-er-done ASAP.  I'd like to proceed with both formal and informal evaluations beginning next week.

A few of you still need to get with me for a preconference to establish the components of your evaluation.  I need to meet with Freeman, Gillmore, Luxton, Onsae, and Stern as soon as possible.  Please stop by my office soon and we'll find a few minutes to get your preconference document done.

Practicum Students
Pam Powell at NAU would like to encourage you to contact her if you would like to have practicum students in your classroom this semester.  If so, please send her an email with the following information: Number of practicum students you'd like to host; School name; Grade level; Your name; Your email; Subject areas of interest.

Walk To School Day
Please consider joining us at the National Guard Armory on Thorpe Road on Wednesday, 03 October for International Walk To School Day.  Students may be dropped off at the Armory by their parents beginning at 7:45.  Bus students who have a signed permission slip will be dropped off at the Armory throughout the morning.  The first group will begin walking back to the school via Thorpe Road and the Francis Short Pond at 8:00 (a slightly different route this year due to construction).  Small groups will leave at intervals thereafter.  If you're willing to show up and walk with a group, we could sure use your help.

Calendar

TPEC Acceptance

Now that many of you have completed the pre-conference phase of the new evaluation process, it's up to you to sign in the TrueNorthLogic website and "accept" the document in order for us to proceed.

You will find a link to the TrueNorthLogic website in the sidebar at-left (see: TPEC Log-in).  When you click on it, it will open the TPEC website in a new tab in your browser.

The process from this point is a little awkward.  To make it a little bit easier for you, I've prepared a short screencast video for you to watch to guide you through the process.  Have a look at it.  But if you still have questions after that, don't hesitate to stop in at the front office and ask.

Updates -- 21 Sept. 2012

Hello everyone,

TPEC Stuff
A few of you have already signed up to meet with me for pre-conferences.  A few have not.  With another few of you I've done your pre-conference as a group.  Point is: if you haven't already done so, please sign up.  If your group is planning to work as a collaborative team on the student achievement data component of your evaluation, please discuss this soon, perhaps in your next CT, and then schedule a time for us to meet together to complete the pre-conference process.

If we've completed your pre-conference, don't forget to log-in to the TPEC site and "sign" your pre-conference document so that we can proceed.

You may use the following assessments for the student data component of your evaluation:

  • AIMSWEB Math
  • AIMSWEB Reading
  • AIMS Math
  • AIMS Reading
  • AIMS Writing
  • AIMS Science
  • Standford-10 (second grade)
  • 4Sight Reading
  • 4Sight Math
  • AZELLA

Collaborative Team Time
I continue to be so pleased with what I observe during your CT times.  In fact, I recognize that your desire to continue your talk about so many things sometimes makes your CT run a little long.  Please do your best to run your meeting during the hour we've set aside for it by arriving on time and then picking up your classes on time, too.  Thanks!

Calendar
  • Friday, 28 Sept.
    • Faculty Meeting with Dr. Ken Garland in the Library, 2:00-2:20
Please acknowledge that you read this post.

Updates -- 14 Sept 2012

Good afternoon, everyone.

Welcome to Friday-payday.  I love Friday-payday!  Don't you?

Student Achievement
The first week of our first intervention cycle is behind us and it seems to have gone off (generally) without a hitch.  Thanks to all y'all for your patience and willingness to work through another yet another new schedule like the professionals you are!

Please remember to make every effort to be on time for your RTI groups.  We're on a tight schedule but it's working when everyone runs on time.

In your CTs this week most of your teams spent much of your time looking in even more depth at your initial student achievement benchmarks for the year.  And, as you now know even better, there's much to be optimistic about! Like you, I am hopeful that we will continue to see gains and improvement in these scores as we continue to move forward during the remainder of the school year.

I really appreciate all your hard work, both in your classrooms and during CT-time.  I've been  impressed and pleased to see so many high-functioning teams looking critically at student achievement and making careful, deliberate plans to work toward the meaningful goals your set for yourselves and your students.  Likewise, it's been refreshing to hear you discuss new approaches, or ways to modify, adapt, and expand (remix!) your current approaches to meet your students' needs.  As I walk around the building each day, it's just-so-great to peek into your rooms, albeit briefly, and nevertheless encounter you and your students deeply and actively engaged in real, relevant content.  Well done!

Keep up the good work.  You're doing great!

Faculty Meeting
We'll meet together as a faculty in the Library on Thursday, 20 Sept.  Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Grand Canyon University will be present briefly.  Thereafter, McFall will talk about how to make a report card using your online gradebook.

Fire Drill
We will have Fire Drill #1 on Thursday, 20 Sept. at 10:00.  This will be a better time than the date I originally planned for, Friday, 21 Sept., because it will not impact special area classes, RTI times, or lunch periods.  Please make note of the change and prepare for the drill by reviewing the contents of your red folder.

TPEC
I've been told that the TrueNorth Logic online teacher evaluation interface will go-live this afternoon (Friday, 14 Sept.) and that we (principals) can begin scheduling you (teachers) for preconferences, formal observations, and such.  This is good news!  And hopefully accurate news, too.  We'll see.

I've asked to be able to visit with each of your teams during CTs next week to see if we can schedule individual times for you to come in and meet with me to preconference (plan) your evaluation process for the coming year.

Please understand: I am just as new to this new process as you are.  And, despite having been "tour'd and demo'd" through it a couple of times, I've never actually had my hands on it in any strict sense, so really I have very little idea about how all of this is going to go down in real-life.  I ask for your patience as I muddle through.  Remember: this year is a trial-year, so we've got a little wiggle room.  To those of you who elect to go first and experiment with this new process along with me: thanks!

Tax Credit
Here's a thing: we raise a lot of tax credit money to fund our extracurricular magnet programs.  You know this.  But, what you don't probably know (because it would seem nobody knew until recently) is that we can't actually spend tax credit money on extracurricular stuff unless a fee is charged.  Don't believe me?  It's true.  You can look it up.  Arizona Revised Statute 43-1089.01 "Extracurricular activities means school sponsored activities that require enrolled students to pay a fee in order to participate."

FUSD has addressed this concern at the administrative level and arrived at a simple solution.  Each elementary school will make an effort to collect a one-time, once-per-year "fee" of $1.00 from every student.  Students unable or unwilling to pay the fee will be "scholarshipped" by the school in order to ensure all students will still be able to participate in all extracurricular activities.

Your Marshall Site Council (whose job it is to make decisions like these) has resolved that at Marshall each classroom teacher should make a deliberate attempt to collect this one-time annual $1.00 from his/her students directly.  It is the Council's hope that this request will engender more buy-in and a deeper, more personal connection to our programs.  Therefore, the Council has asked that I direct you to send home this note (copies will be in your mailboxes on Monday 17 Sept.), or one of your own design that carries a similar message, in order to collect these necessary fees.  As the note indicates, "Families who, for whatever reason, are unable to pay this fee will not be required to and will receive scholarship assistance from the school.  The inability to pay will have no bearing on student-participation; every student at Marshall will always be able to participate in all magnet programs at his/her grade level, regardless."

Thanks for doing this.

Updates -- 07 Sept 2012

Hello everyone,

Best to keep this brief, don't you think?  I'll do my best...

TAG Testing
Fall TAG testing will begin next week.  I received the forms via district mail on Tuesday of this week.  They are due TODAY.  If you have a student who you believe should be tested immediately for TAG please run right down here, grab a form, and get it to Marcia Lescault forthwith.  On the other hand, if you feel it would be appropriate to wait, spring TAG testing will occur between 19 February and 15 March, 2013 and you have until 18 January to complete the paperwork for this testing cycle.  The same paperwork applies and will be kept on file here in the front office.

Grand Canyon University
A rep from GCU will speak to us briefly at our upcoming 20 Sept faculty meeting and afterward will remain on-site in the "orange" room to provide you with additional information about their programs. If you are able to provide them with copies of your transcripts, they will be happy to "evaluate" them for you.

Department Chairs
Thanks to Steve McAllister and Page Ballard for volunteering to be our new department chairs.  Steve will naturally work with our primary grade teachers, and Page with the intermediates.  They will be in contact with you in the near future regarding your 301 Menu Hour Logs.

Morning Duty
If you are a member of our morning duty team, please remember to assign one of your membership to attend to "the littles" on the fenced playground.  There should be at least four adults on the playground each morning, so ensuring that one of you keeps an eye on this playground should be pretty easy.  Thanks.

Magnet Programs Integration Specialist
Did you read yesterday's Blue Note post yet?  I know it's long.  But I think it's important.    Please take a few minutes to read and acknowledge it if you haven't already.  Thanks.

Calendar
  • Monday, 10 Sept.
    • School Improvement Committee, 8:00 in Coe's office
    • Coe at Admin Council, 1:00
  • Tuesday, 11 Sept.
    • Optional faculty meeting (re: Magnet Integration position), 8:00 in the Library
  • Friday, 14 Sept.
    • Fit Kids Kickoff (Sept. Professional Development), 1:00-4:00 at High Country Conf. Ctr.

More about Remix

Hello everyone,

I wrote to you last week about the concept of Remix, in an effort to begin to explain to you my sincere belief that we, as a community, already possess much, if not most, of what we need to increase student achievement and thereby improve our current school letter grade.

However, in order to do so, it's simultaneously my sincere belief that we need to be ready and willing to transform, recombine, and realign some of our assets in new ways in order to ensure that we are working at our most optimal level to achieve better outcomes from our students and staff members alike.

As I said last week, "We've already begun to do so by implementing a specials schedule which enables our special area teachers to become embedded collaborators in your academic curriculum at the classroom level for hours at a time each week. We're still in the learning process with this new approach, but it's working. I'm excited about the effect it will have on our students' achievement. And I believe our opportunities to capitalize on the resources we already possess, by looking at our many other unique assets in similarly new and innovative ways abound."

I believe our one-of-a-kind school-wide arts and science magnet programs, coupled with the unique opportunities made available to us via our Title 1 budget, provide us with another compelling opportunity to remix and transform some of our current assets to better ensure increased student achievement and learning outcomes.

As you know, Marshall occupies a unique position in Flagstaff as a traditional-public-magnet school. As a neighborhood school serving a diverse student population, which runs the gamut of socioeconomic demographics, we have been identified as a federal Title 1 school because more than 40 percent of our students qualify for the federal free-and-reduced-price lunch program. Title 1 funding is intended to assist our school in bridging the achievement gap for specifically for low-income students.

Marshall has also chosen to identify itself as an arts and sciences magnet school for more than a decade. Within this designation, our school has been able to implement a series of unique extracurricular experiences in the arts and sciences for all of our students, at every grade level, free of charge. These programs are budgeted at over $100,000 per year. All funding for these programs is raised independently of the school district’s budget for our school, chiefly through tax credit contributions, annual grant applications, as well as independent donations and ongoing, targeted fundraising.

Greatly to our advantage, our Title 1 budget makes it possible for us to be able to have a full-time RTI Specialist, a full-time Technology Specialist, and a part-time Positive Behavior Support Specialist on staff. Likewise, our Title 1 budget provides funding for part-time kindergarten aides in each of our kindergarten classrooms, as well as a part-time Parent Center Coordinator to assist our students and staff in a variety of useful ways. In addition to these employee roles, our budget has allowed for us to contract on a limited basis with an outside independent vendor to provide for other key services such as grant writing and scheduling coordination for our magnet programs.

As extracurricular programs, for many years our magnet activities have existed outside the realm of our academic instructional time but within the school day. They are taught by expert, adjunct staff with whom we independently contract on an annual basis. These instructors have been encouraged to teach a curriculum above and beyond the established district curriculum, core state standards, and approved curriculum maps. As a result of this approach, as a school we are unable to demonstrate what our magnet programs have done in a valid, quantifiable sense to enhance our students’ academic achievement. They are undeniably an attractive add-on to Marshall’s commercial appeal. And we may feel, anecdotally, that these programs have merit, and rightfully so. But to-date we find ourselves unable to justify this impression with data, with research, or even by pointing to any deliberate approach our school has taken which has been aimed toward better integrating our magnet programs into supporting our academic curriculum and greater student achievement.

Due to an increase in our lower socioeconomic demographic at Marshall, our Title 1 budget has been increased this year. This increase, while not enough in-and-of itself to make it possible for us to add an additional staff member, would nevertheless enable us to create a new role at Marshall if we eliminate the contract with our current Magnet Programs Coordinator.  By eliminating the contracted position, and adding those monies back into the budget, we then have enough money in our budget to remix our assets to create a full-time Magnet Programs Integration Specialist position. This new position would take on all of the responsibilities of the previous independent contractor's job, but would also add-on additional new responsibilities. These new responsibilities will enhance our ability serve our students more effectively, as well as increase their academic achievement, by aligning our existing magnet programs to our core academic curriculum in order to better ensure greater success for all of our students.

For the aforementioned reasons, the new Magnet Programs Integration Specialist position should be implemented at Marshall Magnet School to assist our magnet program instructors, students, and classroom teachers in making legitimate curricular connections between our existing standards-based instruction and our magnet programs. The Magnet Programs Integration Specialist’s job description would continue to incorporate all aspects of the current independent contractor’s position, such as writing grants, coordinating the program schedule, budgeting, and fundraising, while adding the provision of crucial curricular support to magnet program instructors and essential direct instructional support to students and teachers in a variety of academic settings.

Within the scope of his/her position, the Magnet Programs Integration Specialist would:
  • Write and make application to a variety of granting institutions in order to ensure continued funding for magnet programs;
  • maintain budgets and cooperate with the FUSD business office to maintain accurate financial records related to magnet programs;
  • implement a program to increase tax credit contributions earmarked for school-wide magnet programs; create schedules to coordinate magnet program schedule on a yearlong basis;
  • contract with instructors to provide magnet program instruction;
  • assist magnet program instructors in aligning program curriculum and activities to academic standards and grade-level appropriate curriculum, school-wide academic goals, and established district expectations;
  • assist teachers in creating alignments between magnet program activities to academic standards and grade-level appropriate curriculum, school-wide academic goals, and established district expectations; assist students with academic and behavioral support within magnet program settings;
  • collect, assemble and disseminate student achievement data related to magnet program integration
  • coordinate magnet lab visioning project, coordinate future magnet lab schedules and supplies;
  • assist students and teachers with academic and behavior support within future magnet lab setting;
  • participate as an extension and intervention group instructor within the established school-wide RTI framework;
  • fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
If you have questions about the Magnet Programs Integration Specialist position, I, along with members of the School Improvement Committee, will be available to meet with you at an optional Faculty Meeting next Tuesday morning, 11 September, in the Library beginning at 8:00 AM.
