PBIS
Below are a few guidelines, developed recently by your hard-working PBIS Committee, for our Behavior Management Process at Marshall Elementary. Please read through and feel free to email any of the coaches listed below if you have questions about how all of this works at our school.
- Tier 1 – All Kids Blue Tickets Classroom Expectations (classroom management, “bucks”, clip-up charts, etc.) School-wide Expectations Polk School Website Communication with parents (phone calls, agenda, clear notification of behaviors) Keep a running record of incidents, communication, and strategies used. We will need this documentation throughout the process.
- Tier 2 – At Risk Kids (when all Tier 1 strategies are ineffective) Tier 2 is not only for misbehavior. Please bring to the group any student who you think is at risk because of their home life (depression, anxiety, etc.) Students with an IEP or 504 plan should be brought directly to their case manager. (Laura, Amanda, or Nancy) Don’t wait too long. We don’t want the student getting discouraged (OR YOU!!!!). Refer to B-GDM with Tier 2 Behavior Support Request Form (located in the side bar of the Bluenote – feel free to print a few to have on hand) During the waiting period before the meeting, email a coach (Sheila White, Laura Paez, Ellen Hobson, Joel Axler, Nancy McCleskey, Renda Fisk) for some strategy planning. Come to meeting where we can offer support and ideas for new strategies. Cycle of intervention should last a reasonable amount of time. (This will depend on the student.)
- Tier 3 – Kids in chronic crisis. When Tier 2 strategies are exhausted, a Behavior –IDM will take place for that student.
Transitions
On that note, we're going to hope to soon extend to our students, beginning with our most mature and working down through the grade levels, the same kind of expectation of independence and self-sufficiency that we already commonly place on them during RTI, lunch recess, Magnet Monday, and during other transitions throughout the school day. I think it's reasonable to expect, with continual encouragement and reinforcement of our PBIS guidelines, that most of our students will be able to move themselves between our special classes with minimal oversight soon. It will surely take some time to prepare them for this new level of independence, but I think we've proven over time with RTI and the other opportunities that already exist for them to self-transport, that the great majority of our students will be able to handle this expectation just as well.
