Fire Marshall Visit
We were the recipients of a surprise visit from the state Fire Marshal this week. As you know, we failed our inspection. We were officially written up in four areas: Ceiling clearances, Curtains/draperies, Workspace clearance around electrical equipment, and Appliances in classrooms.
The Fire Marshal also noted less formally that we should keep egresses clear, conduct fire drills on a monthly basis, and always keep the hallways devoid of furniture.
We have 10 days to fix the violations or incur "legal action" from the state, which could result in our closure. I appreciate the efforts you've made to get your domains into compliance. I know it sucked to have to remove (or treat) your curtains and, likewise, to get rid of (or move to an office space) your 'fridges and ovens and lamps. I understand that we were not fully aware of these prohibitions prior to the Marshal's visit. But I'm glad that you willingly removed them anyway, once we got the word that they didn't comply. I'm getting the sense that each Marshal has his/her "pet" concerns and that they can seem rather arbitrary to us. Nevertheless, it's all written in the Fire Code and, in the end, these Marshals are just doing their job, which is to help us ensure that our building is as safe as can be for all +/-625 of us who come to work/school here everyday.
I've informed the Marshal that we have made every effort to correct our deficiencies and that he is welcomed to return to our campus at any time to hopefully revise our rating. I have not heard back from him and therefore do not know when he might choose to come back. He might tell me, and if he does I will surely let you know. But he might not. So thanks for ensuring that your area meets the aforementioned criteria henceforth.
Fire Drill Note
Nice job with our drill this morning. Just a couple notes:
- Use both sides of our exit doors when leaving the building during a drill. No need to politely keep to the right, there should be no upstream traffic into the building during a fire drill.
- If you encounter locked gates or restricted/congested access points, such as we have during our past two drills when headed to the FHS ballfields, please do not allow classes to bottleneck as students wait to pass through. Instead, please guide your students to a new location away from the building that you can get them to more quickly.
Route 22
Several of our morning and afternoon buses transfer students at other schools. Route 22 takes on kids from two or three other buses at Kinsey School each morning and is not scheduled to arrive at school until 8:40 per the official FUSD routing sheet. If any of the transfer buses are late to Kinsey, Route 22 ends up running late to Marshall. Some mornings they get here at 8:45. Sometimes not until 8:50. It's a tough situation but not one that we're going to be able to rectify this school year.
Anyway, thing is, when teachers take attendance before Route 22 arrives it creates a real crazy situation for the front office. It would be super helpful if y'all could hold off on taking attendance in the morning until after your sure your Route 22 kids have shown up. Thanks.
