Sorry about the whole "Fit Kids is canceled" thing. I was really hopeful that we'd have this situation cleared up once we got Mr. Most officially hired into our PE position (he is!).
However, because we had something like 10-13 sub-needed absences and vacancies per day every gosh-dang day this week (that's a lot), some of which failed to fill, and some of whom failed to show, I was forced to move subs around to cover classrooms and high-need students, often at the very last minute.
Please know: I feel really badly about canceling your prep time last minute. Drives me crazy, in fact. I hope I don't have to do it too many more times (the position is posted, if ya know anybody). But thanks, as always, for rolling with it.
Going forward, until the position is hired, it's probably advisable for teachers to have a back-up plan in place on the days you've got Fit Kits. Sorry.
New Microwave
Thanks to Billy Weldon and the local Purple Hearts we've got a spiffy new microwave in the lounge.Sure is nice to have him always looking out for us, that's what I think.
TPEC
Two. Just two teachers have completed the Teacher Review And Sign-off portion of the TPEC pre-conference. This is a requirement if your evaluation is to be valid. Please accept your pre-conference data ASAP, whether or not you've already been evaluated (SPED can't yet, because we're still trying to finish your pre-conference). If you're new to TPEC, or have forgotten how to do this, please ask a peer how to do it or, if all else fails, come and see me. Thanks.
Blah blah blah Halloween blah blah
As we prepare for our annual whatever about the presence and appropriateness of Halloween costumes and celebrations at school on Friday 30 October, I hope you will please keep in mind: I believe a separate-but-equal instructional program for students is usually neither. Many of our constituents find the celebration of Halloween to be offensive, contrary to their religious beliefs, or just a distraction from what should otherwise be a normal, productive day of school. If you are planning to incorporate Halloween into your teaching next week, I expect that you will recognize and honor each individual's position on this issue and their right to hold it.
You may not exclude from instruction students who choose not to recognize Halloween.
Nevertheless, classroom-teachers who choose to allow their students to wear costumes at school on Friday may do so provided costumes meet the following criteria:
- Costumes deemed unsafe for any reason will be required to removed. It is advisable that students wear school-appropriate attire beneath their costume. If students do not have a change of clothing, they will be required to stay in the office until parents arrive.
- No costume may be worn which would in any way impede the student from moving safely and quickly out of the building in the event of an alarm.
- Costumes must not obstruct vision or movement or in any way present a hazard to the student or other classmates. Masks covering any part of the face may not be worn.
- Fake knives, swords, or guns may not be used as a part of any costume. Such items will be confiscated and may result in disciplinary action including but not limited to suspension from school.
- Costumes must not be overly gruesome and overtly violent.
Likewise, it is the responsibility as the classroom teacher to enforce these policies. If you choose to allow your students to wear costumes on Halloween, you must be diligent about doing the work of ensuring that each child's costume is safe and compliant with all school policies.
