I'll be honest, I've been writing, revising, deleting, and rewriting this week's Blue Note for several days now. For my efforts, I've netted almost no words that have endured here for more than a few hours at a time. I'm at a loss when it comes to knowing what to say to you under these circumstances. Suffice to say, I find myself quite apoplectic as we have all been forced, once again, to collectively sit by helplessly as yet another deadly crisis of school safety unfolded in our nation.
So, instead of making too feeble an attempt to put my own thoughts down on this page, I'm just going to steal what Superintendent Penca wrote to all of us earlier in the week and hope that it conveys to you my sentiments in this regard, which are entirely in line with his.
I join you in sadness for the events occurring this week at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL, and share your concern for these occurrences becoming too commonplace in schools, malls, movie theaters and concerts across our country. I understand the staff, students and parents of the Flagstaff Unified School District and our community have experienced firsthand the feelings of fear and disruption caused by threats to our schools in recent years. We will continue to refine our procedures to prevent, prepare for, and respond to all types of threats and hazards.
Additionally, we will reaffirm our commitment to ensure our district’s schools are filled with peace, acceptance, inclusivity, compassion, equity and love.
