Hello everyone,During my time in FUSD, I can't recall that we've endured an honest-to-goodness Friday Snow Delay day ever before. There's a first time for everything I suppose.
Thanks to all y'all for helping to keep the wheels on today during all the unusualness this first-of-its-kind situation imposed on our schedule.
State Of The School
Please plan to attend our upcoming Friday Professional Development Day on 28 Feb. We'll be addressing the current State Of The School at this event. I, along with several other members of the faculty and staff, will be reviewing many of our current programs, initiatives, and assets as well as looking into future a bit, too.
We'll meet from 1:00-3:00 in the Library that day.
National Title 1
I had a very interesting time at the National Title 1 Conference I attended in California this week. I got to sit through several interesting sessions over the course of four days, many of which caused me to reflect on our school, our students, and likewise on you, our dedicated faculty and staff. In my opinion, based on what I observed this week, we're doing a lot of things right here at Marshall. But, not too surprisingly, there are also a lot of things that we could improve, too.
Over the course of the next few weeks, I hope to have some time to review with you here on The Blue Note Blog a few of the topics that I found particularly interesting and/or relevant to Marshall, among them:
- the effects of poverty on the brain;
- the APTT model for parent involvement; and,
- lessons we can learn from the Dunbar School in Washington, D.C.
If you haven't already done so, please remember to include the following note in your newsletter or as a paper-note home to your parents:
"Thanks for using your child's planner to communicate with me about homework progress as well as your nightly discussions about classroom and playground behaviors and things like that. But please remember, if you are changing your plans for what your child will do after school, it's essential that you call the office with your change in order to ensure the message is received. It's fine to leave a note to this effect in the planner, but it's not sufficient. Planners get lost. Please ensure you've called the office whenever you're changing your child's after school plan."
Bike Helmets
Students may use the online or paper forms to order helmets . Paper forms must be completed and returned to the office for pick-up no later than 10 March.
Transportation Grants
The Arizona Game and
Fish Department just announced an additional Heritage Grant award opportunity
for the 2014 grant cycle! These one page grants, ranging
from $500-$2,500, cover fieldtrip transportation only and are perfect for classes and grade-levels who wish to take science-based field-trips next year!
Applicants can submit a Heritage Grant proposal for
an Outdoor Education (OE)
Heritage Grant with $14,800 in available funding. Grant
proposals will be accepted until Friday, March 14, at 5 p.m. MST. The application and guidelines are available online. More information is also available at www.azgfd.gov/w_c/heritage_apply.shtml.
